Patna: A man was allegedly beaten to death by a mob on suspicion of carrying beef in Bihar's Saran district. Police have arrested three people in the case.

The victim was identified as Nasheem Quraishi, a resident of HM Nagar under Hasanpur police station of the neighbouring Siwan district.

According to a family member of the victim, Quraishi and his nephew were going to the Jogia village via Rasulpur in Siwan on Holi (March 8) when a group of villagers allegedly stopped them on suspicion of carrying beef in a bag. Soon several villagers gathered and asked them to show the meat they were carrying. When they refused to show it, the villagers allegedly attacked them and started beating them with bamboo sticks and iron rods.

"My young nephew managed to flee from the clutch of the mob, but Quraishi was mercilessly beaten till he fell on the ground. Though local police claimed that Quraishi died on the way to Patna for treatment after being critically injured, we have been informed by some local people that he was dead when police reached the spot," Munna, a close relative of Quraishi, told NewsClick.

R C Tiwari, Rasulpur police station officer in charge, confirmed that a man was lynched on suspicion of carrying beef by a group of over half a dozen villagers. Soon after police got information about this incident, three arrests were made.

Tiwari denied that there was tension in Rasulpur following the incident.

"Everything is normal and under control," he said.

Tiwari told NewsClick that since the case was sensitive, he could not say more about the ongoing investigation into the incident.

"Only senior police officers, including Saran Superintendent of Police Gaurav Mangla, will speak on the case," he said.

Despite repeated attempts by NewsClick to contact Mangla, he could not be reached.

However, a police official of the rank of DSP in Saran told NewsClick on condition of anonymity that police have arrested three accused -- Sushil Kumar Singh, Rajan Shah and Ujjawal Sharma.

"A police team is probing into the incident because of the sensitive nature of the case. Additional security forces have been deployed, and security has been tightened in the area to maintain peace in view of tension."

Afzal Hussain of Rabita Comittee told NewsClick that this brutal incident was an example of hate violence to spread tension in society. It appears to be a part of a conspiracy to discredit the secular credentials of the Mahagathbandhan government led by Nitish Kumar in Bihar, he added.

"The state government should take stern action against the accused and provide compensation to the victim's family," Hussain said.

Last month, Saran witnessed caste tensions (between upper caste Rajput and OBC Yadavs) after two youths succumbed to injuries after being beaten on allegedly by supporters of the husband of a local mukhiya.

In 2019, three men were allegedly beaten to death and one critically injured by villagers over suspicion of cattle theft in Saran.
