Bulandshahr Mob Violence: UP CM Says It Is an 'Accident', and Not ‘Mob Lynching’

Five more people have been arrested on Friday for their alleged involvement in the mob violence in Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr.

Five more people have been arrested on Friday for their alleged involvement in the mob violence in Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr earlier this week, police claimed. Now, the number of people arrested has gone up to nine, even as the key accused, Bajrang Dal leader Yogesh Raj, remains absconding.

Inspector General (Crime) S.K. Bhagat said five persons have been arrested on the basis of video footage and identification done by local residents.

He also said the name of a certain Jeetu Fauji has cropped up during the investigation. Fauji is said to be working with the Border Security Force (BSF), and is posted in the Kargil.

On Friday, a team of police has left for Jammu to arrest him, the officer said, while also clarifying that his exact role and complicity in the mob violence, which left two persons including a police inspector dead, will be clear after the probe by the Special Investigation Team (SIT).

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has kicked up a controversy with his remarks that the murder of police inspector Subodh Kumar Singh by the mob was an 'accident', and not a 'mob lynching'.

Reacting over the statement by the CM, Samajwadi Party (SP) spokesperson Abdul Hafiz Gandi told Newsclick that Adityanath is the most incompetent chief minister UP has ever seen. “He only knows how to communalise and polarise. Development and ensuring rule of law is not his cup of tea.”

He said, "Yogi Adityanath's reaction after the Bulandshahr incident is the grim reminder of the fact that Uttar Pradesh government is more interested in creating communal polarisation for the forthcoming elections in 2019. The BJP-led government has its own set of priorities, and they are now very clear to all. This government is not at all interested in bringing the main accused Yogesh Raj to face the law."

He added, "Development has taken a backseat in Uttar Pradesh, and the message is very clear – nothing will happen to the workers of the BJP and other organisations affiliated to RSS. People's welfare is not BJP's priority. They are forgetting that peace and communal harmony are required for any development to take place.”
