Ahead of the Democratic Youth Federation of India’s (DYFI) national conference to be held between May 12 and 15 in West Bengal, a series of programmes, a rally and a youth carnival are being organised to welcome over 550 delegates from all over the country.

On Saturday morning, a marathon was organised which traversed the arena between Howrah Kadamtala to Dinesh Majumdar Bhawan in Kolkata. Forty-five participants including two women competed in the marathon. Inaugurating the marathon, state DYFI president Minakshi Mukherjee said that the event is meant to forge harmony, as unity in India’s current political atmosphere stands threatened and so does the  Constitution.

The two-day carnival organised in Bijoygarh was kicked off with a blood donation camp on Saturday. A number of film screenings will also be part of the carnival, which was inaugurated by actor Sabyasachi Chakraborty in the presence of renowned director Tarun Majumdar. The movie Jai Bhim was screened on Saturday at the carnival. A music festival was scheduled to take place on Sunday, to be moderated by Sourav Palodhi.

In the run-up to the conference, more than 100 wall graphics have been painted by the DYFi activists – giving a message of gender equality. A plethora of rallies and marches have been organised across the state to spread the message. In one such rally, former activists of SFI and DYFI took part. Satyajit Ray’s Ganashatru was screened later at the workers’ quarters in Dakhin Dari.

The Salt Lake cityscape has been decorated with nearly 20,000 DYFI flags and 40 Maradona cutouts ahead of the conference. About 40 gates have also been constructed  for the conference in the Salt Lake to welcoming the delegates. The main entry into the EZCC auditorium will be in the memory of Dinesh Majumdar, founding general secretary of DYFI
