The Covid pandemic, which not only took hundreds of lives, also became an excuse for governments to cut costs. No, not by taxing the rich and enlarging the government’s kitty, but by cutting social welfare budgets and slashing benefits given to vulnerable and elderly citizens. Yes, rail ticket concessions for senior citizens (60+ age) is one such benefit that was discontinued from March 23, 2020. As a result, Indian Railways is richer by Rs 2,242 crore. Tragic, that in their twilight years, the elderly, who need to be cared for, are being deprived of some little comforts they were enjoying.
