Coronavirus LIVE: Infections at 10,815; India to Grow at 1.9% in 2020, says IMF

The toll in the country due to COVID-19, disease caused by the novel coronavirus, has rose to 353.

COVID Lockdown

As on Tuesday evening till five, the number of confirmed cases crossed 11,000-mark, with as many as 9,272 “active” cases in hospital and 1,189 others, who were cured, according to Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The toll in the country due to COVID-19, disease caused by the novel coronavirus, stands now at 353.

In the wake of the virus outbreak and the nationwide lockdown imposed to contain the spread of it, International Monetary Fund (IMF) projects a grim growth for the Indian economy, cutting it to 1.9 per cent for the current financial year, lowest since 1991.

The output loss associated with this health emergency and related containment measures likely dwarfs the losses that triggered the global financial crisis,” Business Standard reported quoting IMF chief economist Gita Gopinath.

In another news, Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy earlier on Tuesday recorded surging unemployment rate in the country which rose to as high as 24 percent in the week ended April 12 this year.

Meanwhile, as the number of confirmed cases of novel coronavirus continue to remain on an upward trajectory, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced that the nationwide lockdown has been decided to extend till May 3, with easing of restrictions at some places – those which will not see rise in COVID-19 cases – only after April 20. A detailed guideline in this regard will be released on Wednesday, he added.
