Delhi NCR COVID-19: Cases in Decline Even as Migrant Workers Start Returning

The districts that constitute the national capital region are and keen battle to keep the numbers of case down. With migrants workers beginning to return, the administrations of the district should prepare for the possibility of an increase in the number of cases.

Some districts like Karnal and Jind which are part of the National Capital Region (NCR) did not even have confirmed cases on May 1, while Delhi had 2,510 already.

Delhi has continued to bear the brunt of the ongoing pandemic, and the largely urban districts that form the NCR have not been as badly affected by it. Delhi reported 10,852 active cases on August 17, which is more than 50 per cent of the cases in NCR. Alwar, a district in Rajasthan and part of the NCR, has the most number of cases after Delhi, with 1,455 or about 7 per cent of the confirmed cases in the region.
The two districts that are in Uttar Pradesh, Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddh Nagar, have seen a steady growth in the number of cases. On July 17, in fact, Ghaziabad had climbed up to 1,560 and then declined to about 759 confirmed cases on July 31 only to climb up to 1,078 a month later. Gautam Buddh Nagar has also followed a similar trajectory.

Delhi NCR Map Confirmed Cases

Faridabad, which is a huge urban centre in Haryana but part of NCR, on July 29 reported 1,645 confirmed cases. It has since declined to 802 on August 17. That’s because the number of patients who recovered in Faridabad have been higher than the rate of recoveries in other highly affected districts of NCR. The district has also reported the most number of deaths after Delhi. The number of fatalities in Faridabad stood at 154 on August 17, while Delhi has recorded a total of 4,214 deaths so far. Gurugram with 130 deaths and Meerut with 123 deaths are not far behind Faridabad.

Currently though, in terms of active cases, after Delhi, which has about 10,852 cases, Alwar is the district with the most number of active cases with 1,645 reported on August 17. Gautam Buddh Nagar has 1,078 active cases.
Reports indicate that many migrants from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, who left the region in March when the lockdown was announced, have started returning. The number of migrant workers returning will continue to grow in the coming weeks and months. The challenge, for the government of Delhi and the state governments that administer the districts that form the National Capital Region, will be to gear up for the increase in population.
