Delhi Riots Prosecutor Amit Prasad Resigns, Pledges Commitment to Shraddha Walkar Murder Case

New Delhi: Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) Amit Prasad, who had been representing the Delhi Police in cases related to the Delhi Riots of 2020, has tendered his resignation from the role. In a resignation letter addressed to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, dated December 15, Prasad expressed his service for 3.5 years, handling prosecution cases to the best of his ability, but conveyed his inability to continue in the role.
According to a report published in Law Beat, the SPP said in his letter, “However, now I would not be able to continue, hence tendering my resignation with immediate effect. It is requested that my resignation be accepted forthwith. I would like to thank you for the opportunity given to me."
Although the resignation letter did not provide detailed reasons for his departure, Prasad disclosed that there was a significant conflict between his private practice and the cases related to the Delhi Riots. He also mentioned that the Shraddha Walkar case demanded a substantial amount of his time and energy.
As the face of the prosecution in the Delhi Riots matters, Amit Prasad played a pivotal role in high-profile cases, including the much-discussed conspiracy case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the sedition case against Sharjeel Imam.
However, Prasad clarified that despite resigning from his position as the SPP, he would continue to serve as the SPP in the Shraddha Walkar murder case.
"In his resignation letter to Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Delhi VK Saxena dated December 15, Prasad said that for 3.5 years, he handled the prosecution cases to the best of his ability but would not be able to continue," reported Bar & Bench. Prasad explained to them that "there was a lot of conflict between his private practice and the Delhi riots cases" and that the "Shraddha Walkar case was taking a lot of (his) time and energy."
Amit Prasad, as SPP, had been the face of the prosecution in the Delhi Riots matters, presenting arguments in the much-highlighted conspiracy case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the murder case of 85-year-old Akbari Begum and the Sedition case against Sharjeel Imam.
