New Delhi: Leaders of member organisations of farmers’ collective, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), are holding a meeting to discuss the situation unfolding at the Paunja-Haryana border, where one young farmer was killed on Wednesday.

Thousands of Punjab farmers are camping at the border on the way to the ‘Delhi Chalo’ call by SKM-Non-Political and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM). They have put their march on hold for two days after the killing of 21-year-old Shubhkaran Singh.

In a press statement on Wednesday, SKM said its coordination committee meeting on Thursday would take “decisive action” to carry forward the struggle after comprehensive discussions.

The farmers’ collective strongly protested “the brutal police repression and murder of a farmer Shubkaran Singh (23) of Ballo Village, Bhatinda district in the Police firing in the Haryana Punjab border.”

According to SKM, around 15 people have been seriously injured in the repression. “This is a brutal assault on bread earners from farmer families when they were protesting only for the implementation of the written promises made by the Prime Minister,” it said.

The SKM criticised the Prime Minister and the Executive that failed to implement the agreement with SKM signed on December 9, 2021, adding that they were “solely responsible for the present crisis and the causality.”

Meanwhile, according to a report in NDTVfarmers in Punjab blocked the autopsy of Shubkaran Singh, demanding that the government announce compensation for his family. They also demanded a Central government job as part of the compensation.
