Flooding in Himalayan Region- A Planned Disaster?

Tikender Singh Panwar, Former Deputy Mayor of Shimla, talks about the floods in Himachal Pradesh and the larger Himalayan region. He explains how the massive loss of life and property is the result of a developmental model which is unsustainable and is having a disastrous impact on States like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Such policies and the calamities caused by them are also wrecking the livelihoods of the people in the region.  Citing examples from the construction and tourism sectors, Tikender describes the impact of the exploitation of resources. He also talks about the alternative models that might be a first step to avoiding future disasters.
