Following Univ Shutdown, Delhi’s Kerala House Welcomes Jamia, AMU Students

Kerala House in New Delhi has reached out to as many as 70 students from Kerala who are currently studying in the Jamia Millia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). In the aftermath of a shutdown of both the universities, the official Kerala State Mission House in the national capital offered refuge to the students.

Students of both the universities – Jamia and AMU – had to leave the campus on Monday after the respective administrations decided to close the varsity till January 5. The decision came following clashes that broke out between the students and the police during the protests over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019.

Many students had found themselves in a difficult position, as commute options seemed tough to arrange on such a short notice. An offer to stay at the Kerala House, in that light, has come as a big relief for the stranded students.

Similarly, many individuals and college hostels have stepped forward to support the Jamia students, offering them assistance including accommodation or help with booking tickets for transport. The hostel of Miranda House college in New Delhi, too, reportedly offered accommodation to female students of the Jamia university.

In addition to this, support also came in form psychological help to the students who may be going through any distress owing to the protests and police violence.

On Sunday, both the universities saw students protesting against the recent amendments to the Citizenship Act. However, the protests soon turned violent, resulting in many students being detained and several hundreds left injured.
