Heavy Rains and Poor Irrigation Impede 'White Gold' Yield
Rubber is a major cash crop in the Kanyakumari district and has massively contributed to economic growth in the past. Since 2017, the farmers have suffered extensive losses due to cyclones and incessant rain during monsoons. In 2021, the loss was heavy because of the historically high rainfall in May and November. The rubber plantations were stagnant with rainwater, and tapping was carried out for hardly 50 days. Moreover, even the minor relief announced for paddy and other crops eluded the rubber farmers.
