The assault on press freedom has cast a shadow of concern over India’s media landscape. Amid this, NewsClick, as an independent media house that continues to question the establishment, is being hounded by the powers that be. Raising concerns over this scenario, prominent journalist and former editor-in-chief of The Hindu, N Ram, writes in the British magazine Prospect how the “freedom of speech and expression,” guaranteed by the Indian constitution, seems to be “under siege”.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, its leaders, ministers, and enforcement agencies have again tried to up the ante against this publication after a New York Times article alleged Chinese funding links with the publication. The misleading and false allegations have been denied by NewsClick’s Editor-in-Chief, Prabir Purkayastha.

While addressing the allegations against NewsClick, N Ram writes, “We have witnessed a state-engineered McCarthyite campaign of disinformation, scaremongering and vilification against NewsClick, together with the ever-present threat of criminal prosecution for its founder. The world should be watching in horror.”
