The government has to think of a survival package of economic measures because a mere stimulus package would only increase the fiscal deficit. Going beyond cash distribution, an extended public distribution system for all essential commodities has to be implemented for the poor in rural as well as urban areas if food riots are to be prevented, says Arun Kumar, economist and retired professor, Jawaharlal Nehru University, in an interview with Newsclick.
