In what the families allege was a fake encounter, 17-year-old Ather Mushtaq was killed by security forces with two other local boys, claiming to have been involved with the militancy. The incident took place on December 30, 2020, and was followed by large protests across Srinagar demanding justice. Till today, the J&K administration refuses to give back the boys' bodies, maintaining that they were militants.
