Manipur: Vikalp Sangam Calls for Peace and Co-existence, Accountability From Authorities

The Vikalp Sangam (Alternatives Confluence), which includes around 80 organisations and networks across India, has called on the authorities to increase efforts to ensure peace and co-existence in Manipur.

The state of Manipur has been seeing ethnic conflict between Meitei and Kuki communities since May 2023. The Sangam called out the role of state government and its authorities for their failure to, first, pre-empt the violence and, later, to control its spread. The statement also highlights the refusal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the state since the start of the conflict.

In its demands, the Sangam has asked for the immediate dismissal of the present Chief Minister of Manipur, N Biren Singh. Among other things, the Sangam has demanded the formation of a Peace Building and Reconciliation Commission with at least 50% women representing every community in the state.
