Srinagar: The Cyber Police of the Jammu and Kashmir police on Friday issued an advisory cautioning people against several international phone numbers believed to be spreading rumours about the upcoming G20 summit.

The callers from these numbers are allegedly campaigning against the major event to be hosted in Kashmir between May 22-24. Some of these callers purportedly have been asking people to boycott the meetings.

Many persons have been receiving these calls for the past several days following which the police issued an advisory against the calls.

“The general public is advised to remain cautious towards some suspicious telecommunications and not to respond to any of the following numbers +44 7520 693559, +447418343648 and +44 7520 693134,+44 7418 343648 or any ISD number/virtual numbers which are spreading rumours regarding the upcoming G 20 event,” the advisory read.

According to a senior police official, these numbers are allegedly spreading anti-national messages and propaganda against the event which is the first major global event since the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35 A in August 2019.

The cyber police added that they have taken cognisance and launched an investigation into the matter while urging people to report such calls to the police.

“The general public requested to remain alert towards such attempts and not to respond to any of such suspicious call,” the police said. A similar advisory against the callers was issued by Jammu police a few days ago that asked the public not to pay heed to the campaign against the G20.

The police have heightened security measures across the region in view of the upcoming meet. The police have placed a 3-tier security cover to thwart all security threats in the coming days. For the event, elite marine commandos and NSG have been deployed in parts of Srinagar close to the venue.

More than 100 delegates are expected to visit Srinagar for the Tourism Working Group-related meetings next week as India assumed the presidency of G20 for the current year. It is hosting delegates from 19 nations and the European Union but of the members China and Turkey are likely to skip their visit to Jammu and Kashmir.
