Amid the Sabarimala temple row, the Kannur district unit of the BJP in Kerala recently released a circular, with instructions for over 200 party activists to gather on the Sabarimala temple premises to “defend custom and culture”. The circular was issued in the name of BJP district president P Sathyaprakash.

The circular in Malayalam was issued on November 14. The rough translation of the circular reads, “As the state committee had earlier directed the selected activists to reach Sannidhanam [the temple premises] to save the custom and culture of Sabarimala, the activists from our district have to go on December 13, 2018. The trained activists from Koothuparamba, Dharmadam, Thalassery and Kannur are the part of the team. The trained activists also have to carry the necessary things in their handbag. The classes for such activists will be held at Mararji Bhavan on December 2, 2018, and adequate directions will be provided too.” The circular also contains region-wise data of the BJP workers who have to be at the site.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) CPI(M) strongly condemned the planned effort to disrupt the pilgrimage at Sabarimala temple.

“The BJP and the RSS in Kerala have been organizing their activists so as to send them to the Sabarimala temple since the current pilgrimage season began on November 16. The aim is to take control of the premises of the temple and to create a law and order problem there,” the CPI(M) said in a press statement.

“Proof of this nefarious intent has now come to light with the exposure of a circular issued on November 14, 2018, by the Kannur District Committee of the BJP. The circular calls for the dispatch of  200 trained volunteers from four areas of the district to the Sabarimala temple on December 13. The circular has also instructed these volunteers to carry necessary "materials" in their handbags. The fact that a unit of the ruling party at the Centre is planning to send "trained" volunteers with the necessary equipment to the temple is a serious matter,” added the press statement.

The party also urged the people to be vigilant about such dastardly attempt to disturb the sanctity of the temple.
