The country is in the midst of its worst economic crisis. It appears to be a price the people are paying for backing an authoritarian rule.

Sri Lankans elected Gotabaya Rajapaksa as their president in the aftermath of the deadly Easter Sunday blasts. In doing so, they turned to a man who was widely accused of being ruthless and autocratic. The result has been two years of whimsical economic policies, including populist tax-cuts and an overnight switch to organic farming. Now, Sri Lanka is in the midst of its worst economic crisis. It appears to be a price the people are paying for backing an authoritarian rule.
