The Tamil Nadu government has allowed automobile manufacturing companies to operate under the 'Continuous process industries' list during the ongoing COVID-19 lockdown. Several leading multinational companies like Renault Nissan, Hyundai, Royal Enfield, MRF, Yamaha and Ford are continuing their production in the state under this exemption. However, the industrial cluster has been hit hard by the second wave of the pandemic, with employees in several companies getting infected and succumbing to the virus. These workers have been protesting against the managements' negligence towards its employees and demanding the government to ensure safety regulations. Some companies are on the verge of temporary closure due to the pressure from the workers and trade unions. NewsClick presents a ground report.
