The students of the State Institute of Film and Television, Rohtak, have called off their three-week-long protests after the administration included the parents’ intervention. The students have been protesting against the autocratic tactics of the administration for almost a month now. The students had boycotted classes and examinations, and had even launched a hunger strike for the past few days in the State University of Performing and Visual Arts’ Rohtak campus. The protests, which were sparked after the administration proposed a plan to introduce new programmes – despite the failure to provide infrastructural support to the students – have been gaining momentum from May 6.

The protests were called off following an intervention from the parents earlier this week. The administration promised the parents that they would take immediate action in the matter. However, the students have vowed to continue their resistance against the administration. The prime concern of the students was to stop the addition of the new mass communication course, due to limited resources and no availability of technical facilities. The institute has suggested that they will transfer the Mass Communication course to a sister college in two years and promised to invest Rs 4 crore to increase the resources. However, all these promises were communicated to the parents only verbally.

The institute had also suspended fourteen students in the light of the protest, which has been withdrawn by the administration. The Court had summoned the students on May 28 for a hearing on the case. However, the main demand for the removal of the mass communication course has not been accepted by the administration. The students have been told that in case of a shortage of resources, the Film and Television course students will be given preference over the mass communication students. The structural problems die the lack of technical facilities continues to plague media institutes in India, with aspiring students left in the lurch having to protest for the most basic facilities.
