The Rohingya language was primarily oral until the 1980s, and the spoken word passed on its rich literary history.

The Rohingya language was primarily oral until the 1980s, and the spoken word passed on its rich literary history. Known as the Rohingya Hanafi language system, Mohammad Hanif introduced the script in 1980. It soon assumed importance as a vital tool in preserving and promoting the language. Ismail teaches children in a refugee camp in Faridabad, adjacent to India's capital, New Delhi.
