Curacao beat Indian football team 3-1 in their King's Cup match in Buriram, Thailand, on May 5. All the goals in the matches came in the first half with Curacao opening the scoring after taking control of the midfield. Curacao scored thrice in the match -- opening with Rolieny Bonevacia, before Leandro Bacuna made it 2-0, Sunil Chhetri got one back via a penalty for India, who conceded again with Elson Wuincy Hooi striking it past Gurpreet Singh Sandhu. Despite the result, India have a lot to look forward to for the future. Five debutants for starters, Sahal Abdul Samad the standout among them. The Kerala boy has a bright future for the team, based on his display. He has skill, the pace, and most of the will  necessary to succeed as a midfielder. Stimac’s reign is off to a start, even it is with a loss. It can only get better from here though. Onwards and upwards.

The four-team tournament’s format is pretty straight-forward with the winner of the opening round of matches advancing to the final. With the loss, India will either play hosts Thailand or Vietnam for the third place.

No Cricket, Please

We break for some drinks. Because football isn’t unlike cricket. Talking of cricket….

Lets not talk cricket.

Water Break Tactic

These water breaks can work as tactical wonders.

Bheke Not Fast Enough

Pranoy for me after playing with Jhingan and Bheke in defense is not coming up fast enough and thus the extra space in the middle.

Lonely Chhetri

Think Chhetri is being wasted if you play him alone up front.

Penalty! India Strike Back

30’ Penalty!!! For India. Great chance to get one on the scoreboard. Chhetri to take it. And Converts

Chhetri Strike

31’ Great penalty from Sunil Chhetri. India’s most-capped player gets another international goal to his name.

Bacuna Strikes, Curacao Up 3-1

33’ Leandro Bacuna make it 3-1 to Curacao with a cool finish into the left corner after being left absolutely unattended by a hapless and uncommunicative defense.

Reality Check for Bheke

Rahul Bheke is getting a serious reality check in International football.

Of Bad Beginnings

37’ Stimac is staring at an unenviable statistic right now. No Indian manager in the last decade has started their stint with a loss. The four previous though faced off against Maldives, Malaysia, Syria and Nepal. Compared to them Curacao are elite. Bad beginnings don’t always portend bad endings.

India Outclassed

39’ There’s silence in the stands and in our live blog centre too. Really not much to report. India are being allowed to pass the ball around as long they do so in their own half of the pitch. Any movement forward and the Curacao midfield swarms them like bees.

Evolved Football

40’ Curacao have a corner. Wicked delivery, Gurpreet comes out but spills. The ball falls to Gaari who takes a few touches, but then decides to goes back for a reset. This is highly evolved football.

Brandon High

43’ Again the move initiated by Brandon Fernandes, the ability of having someone who plays on the wing come and play in the center is that he can operate in small spaces and thereby find openings, Anirudh Thapa’s position under threat.

Udanta Miss

44’ A brilliant bit of play from Brandon who spins and turns past his marker and releases, Chhetri. Chhetri cuts it back to Sahal, who releases Udanta in space. Udanta though for some reason decides to try and curl it into the far corner, rather than put his foot through it. Ugh. That should’ve been a goal.

Last Ditch Clearance

45’ Michael Maria almost adds to Curacao’s tally with the final play of the half. A long hoofed ball from their defence is completely ignored by India at the halfline. And Maria runs free. Unfortunately though he takes a bad touch inside the box, and Jhingan, who is sprinting back at speed, clears it away. With that the whistle blows. Halftime.

Halftime Thoughts

India need to do much better. Rahul Bheke needs to have a drink, sit down and take stock. He’s had a tough half.

Amarjit, Rainier Debut

45’ And we’ve kicked off again. Pronay and Chhangte are off. Amarjit and Rainier are on. Debut for both of them.

Amarjit Surprise

I honestly did not see Amarjit being the first U17 boy to play for the senior team

-- Arjun Pandit

Corner for India

49’ India have a corner. Some nonsense defending from Curacao.
