Curacao beat Indian football team 3-1 in their King's Cup match in Buriram, Thailand, on May 5. All the goals in the matches came in the first half with Curacao opening the scoring after taking control of the midfield. Curacao scored thrice in the match -- opening with Rolieny Bonevacia, before Leandro Bacuna made it 2-0, Sunil Chhetri got one back via a penalty for India, who conceded again with Elson Wuincy Hooi striking it past Gurpreet Singh Sandhu. Despite the result, India have a lot to look forward to for the future. Five debutants for starters, Sahal Abdul Samad the standout among them. The Kerala boy has a bright future for the team, based on his display. He has skill, the pace, and most of the will  necessary to succeed as a midfielder. Stimac’s reign is off to a start, even it is with a loss. It can only get better from here though. Onwards and upwards.

The four-team tournament’s format is pretty straight-forward with the winner of the opening round of matches advancing to the final. With the loss, India will either play hosts Thailand or Vietnam for the third place.

Chhetri Hits Post

81’ Chhetri hits the post. Good ball from Pritam, but another chance gone.

Sahal, Soosairaj, Chhetri Combine

82’ Decent couple of minutes for India. Sahal, Soosairaj and Chhetri working hard and showing both purpose and cohesion. Great chance for Amarjit Kiyam, the captain of india’s first World Cup squad (under 17), had a great chance to get a goal on debut but he couldn’t get the ball out of his feet.

Sahal's Dream Debut

It’ll be interesting to see a) Sahal’s passing accuracy b) his success rate at take-ons and dribbles and c) his chance creation numbers. He has had a great game. Superb debut. Much to love.

Raynier Procrastinates

85’ Too much thinking from Raynier Fernandez. He had the ball, the space and just one man to beat at the edge of the Curacao box. Instead, he cut back, and passed it to no one in particular.

Udanta to Chhetri

86’ Made in Bengaluru. Udanta crosses it in, Chhetri heads it over though.

Chettri Rushed

Good chance for Chhetri in the box.  Ended up with more time and space than he would’ve expected. Rushed the header a bit and also failed to attack it.

Enter Bumrah

89’ Some fellow called Jasprit Bumrah is, apparently, carving up South Africa. If he can do it on a Wednesday in Southampton he can probably do it on a summer eve in Spain. Sign him up, Barca. Messi, Suarez, Bumrah. MSB.

Corner for India

91’ Curacao lose the ball in a bad area, Chhetri and Soosairaj combine. But the latter’s first touch drags him too wide for anything but a cut back. Which hits a Curacao boot. Corner.

Chhetri Takes Corner, Saved

92’ Chhetri puts the ball in, and on first look it seems Jhingan has headed on target. But replays suggest it came off a Curacao defender. Regardless, its saved.

Last Minutes

94’ Last couple of minutes. India will play either Vietnam or Thailand for third place.

Full Time

India had a better second half than the first, says Renedy, totally agree, but Curacao did also take their foot off the gas in that second half. All in all, good to see India going forward and making quick passes but it’s in the final third of the opposition and of the Indian half, is where our biggest problem resides.
