Gurpreet Singh Sandhu played like a man possessed under the bar while the rest of the Indian football team players showed tremendous resilience and fighting spirit, holding Asian Champions Qatar to a 0-0 draw in their FIFA World Cup qualifier match at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium in Doha on September 10. The away draw has got things back in control for Igor Stimac´s men, who began their campaign with a loss against Oman in their Group E opener last week.  (Get highlights and analysis of the Qatar vs India FIFA World Cup qualifier match below).

Live blog

FULL TIME

Qatar will be very frustrated. But what an effort from India. Points on the board in the World Cup qualifier. At a World Cup venue, against a World Cup side and the champions of Asia. We had said this is India’s biggest game in decades. Igor Stimac and the boys are celebrating like they have won the World Cup itself. And why not? None of us gave them a chance. The legs will be like jelly in a little while, but well worth it. Two matches into the group stage and India have played 150 or so minutes of solid, dogged, football. Bangladesh are up next on October 15. We will, of course, be here.

Indian Viking Clap, Gurpreet Heroics

That 8% crowd in the corner of the stadium are chanting the roof off. They do the Viking clap. 11 saves, made by Gurpreet Singh Sandhu. His palms must be stinging, but he leads the celebrations. The broadcast cuts off, because no one cares about a draw against Qatar on a Tuesday evening. But if you were watching, or reading or even paying attention in passing, you know this is quite a point. Hope you’ve enjoyed our blog.

Happy Onam!

Good night.
